Can I Use a Sandwich Maker to Make Pancakes?

Sandwich makers are among the most common gadgets found in kitchens these days. This is because they serve many purposes other than just making plain sandwiches.

That includes toasting bread, making waffles, or even grilling bacon or vegetables. Therefore, many people wonder whether they can use a sandwich maker to make pancakes too.

Yes, you can use a sandwich maker to make pancakes. Plus, a sandwich maker pancake can sometimes be even fluffier than the one made in a pan!

How to make pancakes in a sandwich maker

Making pancakes in a sandwich maker is a fairly easy process. You can follow this method:

  1. Combine all dry ingredients except sugar (flour, salt, and baking powder) in a bowl. Be sure to sieve them or else your end mixture will be lumpy.
  2. Now, take another bowl with oil in it. Add sugar and start beating it until it becomes creamy.
  3. Then, in this liquid mixture, add milk and vanilla essence. Then, add your eggs one by one and combine the whole mixture together.
  4. Now add the flour mixture gradually. Fold it properly with a spatula ensuring that no lumps remain.

Tip: Do not be too hard on the mixture as it will result in tough and chewy pancakes.

  1. Turn on your sandwich maker so that it starts to preheat. The red light should turn on.
  2. When it is done preheating, the green light will turn on. Now, grease the surface with some oil or butter and pour your mixture into the sandwich maker.
  3. Close the lid of the sandwich maker and wait.

Tip: After adding the pancake batter, wait for 1 to 2 minutes before closing the lid. This makes the pancake fluffier and softer.

  1. After about 3 or 4 minutes, check on the pancakes. If they are golden brown from the outside, take them out. Or else just wait for another 40-50 seconds.
  2. Serve the pancakes with anything you want, maple syrup, strawberries, blueberries, etc.

Problems you might face while making pancakes in a sandwich maker

Since sandwich makers are not specifically intended for making pancakes, you may encounter some difficulties as follows:

  • The pancake can easily burn from the outside if the temperature is even a little high. The ideal temperature is around 350°F.
  • Another problem you can run into is that it may become hard and deflate if you mess up the timing. And as every sandwich maker is different, you may need a few tries to get both the temperature and the timing right.
  • If you do get a soggy and uncooked pancake though, there is a solution. After turning off the sandwich maker, just let the pancakes sit inside it for an additional 2 to 3 minutes. This will make them crispier from the outside and cook any raw bits inside them.
